Archives For In the Shadow of Jezebel

“When I chose you as my daughter, I sent word to Jezebel that we had our next Queen of Destiny. You were lively and quick-witted, accepting of change, and eager to learn—even as a young child. I believed you could be a queen.”

In the Shadow of Jezebel

Andrews Jezebel final jpg from CherylIn the Shadow of Jezebel by Mesu Andrews swept me away to the drama-filled days of Old Testament times. To be a believer then was not about sitting quietly in church with a Bible in your lap. It meant muscular priests, strong enough to subdue and slay sacrifices, and bold enough to face down ruthless rulers. Brave women who could survive—and even find joy—in a world where they were often used, dominated, or enslaved. And ordinary people willing to take their lives in their hands to follow Yahweh and stand against the pagan culture.

Heroism in the midst of danger.
Truth’s simple beauty illuminating the lies that enslave.
The power of love to heal a fearful heart.

Jehosheba’s story involves all of these. Raised by the cruel Queen Athaliah to be a priestess of Baal, Sheba knows firsthand how it feels to be oppressed by Queen Jezebel’s shadow. When her parents decide to unite the House of David with Yahweh’s High Priest by marrying her off to a stranger named Jehoida, Sheba despairs. Little does she know that Jehoida’s upright, generous nature and sacrificial love will heal her heart and help her fulfill her true destiny. Together Sheba and Jehoida strive to “live the truth” & “be wise without lies” as they navigate the treacherous world of palace intrigue. As their trust in Yahweh grows, so does their love for each other.

What I liked best . . .
  • The story world, rich with cultural details
  • Jehosheba’s tender heart—in spite of her dysfunctional upbringing
  • The noble yet endearing Jehoida
  • The focus on the High Priest as both spiritual leader and humble man
  • The palace intrigues and drama—better than any reality show!
  • The glimpse into the lives of those who served in Yahweh’s Temple
  • Sheba’s relationship with her brother Hazi
A favorite scene . . .

I loved one of the first scenes in the book. The priests are faithfully carrying on in the Temple in spite of the oppression of their evil rulers. They trust to the ancient custom of drawing lots to decide who will carry out which duties. By the end of the procedure, they are humbled and amazed to find that God has touched their lives in a very personal way.

“Moments ago [Jehoiada] had silently questioned the reliability of the sacred Urim and Thummim, but now God had spoken through common stones. Perhaps Yahweh was more reachable than he thought.”

Not only will Mesu Andrews’ biblical fiction sweep you away to another time and place, but it will also inspire you to know God better.

I bought Mesu’s debut novel, Love Amid the Ashes, because I’d never read a romantic story featuring Job. From the first pages, I could see that she has a special gift for storytelling. I loved how she helped me see Job as a hero. Yes, Old Testament Job—a noble, handsome, what-a-girl-wants hero. So it’s NO surprise that each of her novels brings something unique to the world of inspirational fiction.

This year, I’m privileged to be on Mesu’s launch team for her latest novel, In the Shadow of Jezebel. I’ll be sharing a review of this novel next week. The Scavenger Giveaway has ended, but here’s some vital information about Mesu’s book.

What’s it about?

Here’s the blurb from Amazon: Princess Jehosheba wants nothing more than to please the harsh and demanding Queen Athaliah, daughter of the notorious Queen Jezebel. Her work as a priestess in the temple of Baal seems to do the trick. But when a mysterious letter from the dead prophet Elijah predicts doom for the royal household, Jehosheba realizes that the dark arts she practices reach beyond the realm of earthly governments. To further Athaliah and Jezebel’s strategies, she is forced to marry Yahweh’s high priest and enters the unfamiliar world of Yahweh’s temple. Can her new husband show her the truth and love she craves? And can Jehosheba overcome her fear and save the family—and the nation—she loves?

With deft skill, Mesu Andrews brings Old Testament passages to life, revealing a fascinating story of the power of unconditional love.
