First Response Or Last Resort

Corrie Ten Boom Prayer

Corrie Ten Boom had a way of getting right to the heart of a matter and making folks re-evaluate their priorities. Her quotes never fail to bear fruit in my heart.

These insights by C. S. Lewis follow a similar theme . . .

“We regard God as an airman regards his parachute.

It’s there for emergencies but he hopes he’ll never have to use it.”

“If God were proud He would hardly have us on such terms: but He is not proud, He stoops to conquer.

He will have us even though we have shown that we prefer everything else to Him,

And come to Him because there is ‘nothing better’ now to be had.”

Their words bring to mind how God gives grace after grace in response to my heart’s fickle yearnings.

And I am grateful.

“For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.” John 1:16

Thanks for stopping by today. Blessings, friends!

  1. Very thought provoking. Prayer should not be our spare tire after we are in trouble.

  2. John 1:16 is one of my favorite verses “grace upon grace” – forever grateful. Enjoyed those quotes and the reminder today. Many thanks.

  3. It is so true that we want to use God as our backup–in case we can’t do something on our own. But we need him for EVERYTHING. Everyone on our own is less than what it would be with him. Thanks for this encouraging word, Renee. I want to depend more and more on God, less and less on me.

  4. Renee Ann, how blessed to “come to Him because there is ‘nothing better’ now to be had.”
    Thank you! Susan

  5. Ah, I do enjoy Corrie Ten Boom.

  6. Most people are guilty of this. Turning to God only when they’ve exhausted all other options. Only to realize they could have saved themselves a lot of effort and time when they turned to God first.

  7. Amazing post . Enjoyed reading through 🙂

  8. As always I loved your thoughts and the graphic. Blessings and hugs!

  9. Sad, but true. Just answer the prayer and let me continue to live the same way I’ve been doing. But He wants our hearts. He wants to rock our worlds. Thank God for His patience and how He never gives up on us. I pray I seek His best and not always what I want.

  10. Great quotes about prayer. Thank you for sharing today. Joining you from Still Saturday.

  11. Thank you for sharing so many encouraging quotes to spur us on to cry out to Jesus as our first response and to be in conversation with him throughout the day.

  12. Very thought provoking – Thanks for linking up to Pin Worthy Wednesday, I have pinned your post to the Pin Worthy Wednesday Pinterest Board.

  13. I enjoyed this post very much – even though it stepped on my toes!

I don’t want the Lord to feel like He is my last resort!

  14. Renee Ann,
For years I have made it a habit to meet Him first thing in the morning and have found that that meeting has kept me, I am sure, from lots of troubles I would have otherwise encountered. Making sure I am primed and oiled first before I face the world has yielded the calm assurance of His abiding presence….jean PS A suggestion….listen to Charles Billingsley’s version of “Down from His Glory”….totally inspiring! God is good!
