Cover 1“In the same way the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” Romans 8:26

I’m so glad I said ‘yes’ to reviewing Beth Moore’s Whispers of Hope: 10 Weeks of Devotional Prayer. Working through this book—which is part devotional and part prayer journal—has strengthened and changed me.

If you do nothing else today, enter my giveaway for a copy of the book. You just might win!

Truly, God is using Beth’s words to whisper hope to my heat. Here’s a passage I found especially touching   . . .

“Imagine this poignant scene. The child of God musters her last bit of strength to collapse before the throne of God. Words do not come—just groanings.

They are not her groanings, though they emerge from so deep within, she thinks they are hers.

The Spirit of God searches her heart, gathers her pain, and lifts it to the Father of all comfort. The Spirit of God, knowing both the depth of her agony and the will of the Father, can bring forth glory from even this. He insists that the Father issue overflowing comfort. He urges the child to let the Father have His way.

He prays for things that she could not bear to pray.

That she lacks the courage to pray.

He prays for glory.

How long does the child lay before God’s throne?

Until strength comes.

Until she identifies the heart of the Spirit’s intercession for her and can make it her own. Perhaps this is one of life’s finest hours for the believer—when the will of the Father and the will of the child converge as one—and the cloudy pillar of God’s glory settles on her shoulders like a down comforter.

And for just a moment, heaven comes to earth.”

My favorite quote–well, it’s actually a poem Beth Moore wrote:

Gift Alert: This book is pretty enough to give as a gift. The deckle edge pages give the impression of age, and the cover gives the illusion of being hand stamped. The cover flaps are just as charming & make useful bookmarks—as you can see in my photo.

Sherman Audio cover 2This past month I was treated to an audio recording of The Dangerous Journey of Sherman the Sheep. Sherman’s story is an allegory that teaches kids about the lure of temptation, the danger of negative peer pressure, and the love and mercy of God—who never fails to seek us when we’re lost and put us back on track.

Sherman lives with his family in God’s Country, a rugged but beautiful place. Life is not always easy for Sherman and the rest of the flock, but they are content with the Shepherd’s presence—as long as the grass is plentiful, that is.

But when food grows scarce and the Shepherd leads the flock through dark, narrow canyons to find better ground, any normal sheep might begin to doubt his way of life. That’s the dangerous time of year. The season when it’s easy for a young sheep to cast his eyes towards the mountain, where the rams sleep and play the day away without fear or guilt. And that’s how Sherman’s troubles begin . . .

What I liked Best:
I’ll let author Dean Davis share what makes this story work in his own words . . .

“From the very beginning of my Christian walk I admired a famous old painting called The Good Shepherd, in which we see a Shepherd (with face hidden) rescuing a sheep trapped on a mountain ledge. That picture said it all.

It also suggested a story which I told to my children. Eventually, some of the folks who heard me tell the story at church asked me to write it down. As I wrote, I found myself targeting adolescent or pre-adolescent boys, who today are in desperate need of godly role models, a clear vision of manhood, and a revelation of the thrill of genuine Christian discipleship.

I started out telling my own story—which is simply the old, old story—in a way that young boys could grasp.

Soon, however, I realized that an allegory was taking shape under my fingers, one that could well speak to kids of all ages.

I hope it has, and I hope it will.”

***Thanks to Cladach Audio Books for sending me a copy to review.

About the Author: Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean Davis earned a degree in philosophy from U.C. Santa Cruz. After several unsatisfying years on “Sin Mountain,” the Good Shepherd rescued him, and eventually Dean became a pastor and Bible teacher in Santa Rosa, California, where he currently resides.

Dean has often worked with children and youth and enjoys story telling. He is currently director of Come Let Us Reason, a Bible teaching ministry specializing in the study of apologetics and the biblical worldview.

Dean and his wife, Linda, are the parents of two sons and three daughters, all of whom have now flown the family nest. In addition to The Dangerous Journey of Sherman the Sheep, Dean has authored nonfiction books, including: In Search of the Beginning and The Test: A Seeker’s Journy to the Meaning of Life (Pleasant Word).

“We all know a Simon Orwell. These days, this type of person is all too common. An individual with huge potential, who allows himself or herself to become distracted by the multitude of temptations that basically define modern life.” Davis Bunn, author of Unlimited

Pin Davis Bunn

This distracted, purposeless Simon Orwell is the main character in Davis Bunn’s latest novel, which was inspired by the experiences of Bunn’s mentor, Harold Finch.

(Not the brilliant, gentle watcher from TV’s Person of Interest but just as fascinating a character!)

Who is the real life Harold? “Harold Finch was formerly the founder and CEO of the first management-leadership consulting groups in the US. In the mid-seventies he sold the company to H&R Block for over a hundred million dollars—back when a hundred million actually meant something. Answering God’s call, he has spent the past three decades traveling the world, teaching his concepts for free and helping underprivileged children learn that they do indeed have both a purpose in God’s eyes, and the potential to succeed.”

Curious to know how he figures into the plot? Here’s the book summary: Simon Orwell is a brilliant student whose life has taken a series of wrong turns. At the point of giving up on his dreams, he gets a call from an old professor who has discovered a breakthrough in a device that would create unlimited energy. He needs Simon’s help.

Upon crossing the border, nothing goes as the young man planned. The professor has been killed and Simon is assaulted and nearly killed by members of a powerful drug cartel.

Now he must take refuge in the only place that will help him, a local orphanage. There, Simon meets Harold Finch, the orphanage proprietor who walked away from a lucrative career with NASA and consulting Fortune 500 companies to serve a higher cause.

With Harold’s help, Simon sets out on a quest to uncover who killed the professor and why. In due time, he will discover secrets to both the world-changing device and his own unlimited potential.

What I liked best about the story . . .

Davis Bunn has a way of creating a story which shares the intimate journeys of people like you and me—yet these ordinary folks experience firsthand how their lives affect issues that feature large on the world stage.
And isn’t that just how God works? He can orchestrate a world-wide battle yet tenderly turn His attention to our smallest concern. I love that!

I also appreciated . . .

  • Characters that pulled me into the story
  • A fast-paced, exciting plot
  • The message of hope
  • How the book highlights the plight of today’s orphans
  • That there’s a movie version!
  • And that the movie stars conservative politician and actor Fred Thompson! Love him!

My favorite lines . . .

Unlimited quote 1

My advice: Make plans to see the movie & share this story with a friend!

Would you be thrilled to meet 30 young ladies who are dedicated to living for God and giving voice to His work in their lives? Then let me introduce you to a group of writers who will give you hope for the future: Godly Girls for God.

Their Webzine, Godly Girls for God unites 30 writers, ages 11 to 25. They post devotionals and stories every Friday. Follow this link to peruse their site. If you know a young writer who might be interested in writing for the site, you’ll find an application here.

Their Purpose: “Our heart is to honor Christ with our writing and to let God speak through us in order to bring others to Christ. Everyone has a unique story. Everyone has experienced God’s work in their lives to get them to where they are today. We strive to keep the story going, by having real girls writing the truth.”

godly girls 2a

Founder: This webzine is the brainchild of Hillary Beth Koenig. Hillary, now 24 and married, was 15 when the webzine really took off.

Why did Hillary gather these girl writers together? In Hillary’s words, “God has taught me that He is working all over the world in hearts, and that we are far more alike than we realize as true believers in Jesus. It was reinforced to me that we are not alone, and that we can find others going through very similar things. Satan’s biggest lie is that ‘no one else could possibly understand me.’ It isolates us in a way that makes it hard for us to open ourselves up to God, and others in healthy ways.”

godly girls for god 3a

Their Book: The GGFG have published a book called Write for Him: The Story of Godly Girls for God. This is the story of how God brought together an online community of girls, bound by their writing hobby. The 25 young ladies featured in the book come from many different backgrounds and represent 10 different countries—Australia, Burundi, Canada, Ghana, Indonesia, Ireland, Russia, the Philippines, Zimbabwe, and the United States.

The girls gathered their devotionals, fictional stories, testimonies, poems, and quizzes into a book. The topics reflect how the girls put their trust in God to overcome addictions, put away distorted views of God, cope with losing a parent, deal with bullies, face their fears about the future, and trade the messages of this world for the Truth. The authors range in age from 11 to 24.

GIVEAWAY: When Hillary contacted me about giving away a copy of her book, I was eager to share this opportunity with all of you. Enter below. I’ll give the name of the winner to Hillary & she’ll send out your book. Return next week to see who won!

My bloggy friend Amber from Seasons of Humility lined up some of us to highlight an exciting new YA novel by Lena Goldfinch. Today I’m sharing a summary of the book and a link to a special giveaway. It’s open to all so please be sure to enter!

I haven’t read this story, but here’s the summary Amber shared with me: Kita can meld song into stone. In a world with no written word, storytelling—the ability to meld (or magically impress) song into stone—is greatly honored. The village honors her master as their medicine man, but Kita knows he’s secretly a sorcerer who practices black magic. She fears he’ll use her beautiful gift for a killing spell, so she conceals it from him. Each day, his magic tightens around her neck like a rope. His spells blind the villagers, so they can’t see him for what he really is.

Not that anyone would want to help her. She was found in the forest as a baby and would have died if a village girl hadn’t brought her home. But the villagers saw Kita’s unusual coloring and decided she belonged to the mysterious tribe who lives in the forests of the volcano, a people feared for their mystical powers. So they fear her too. Now seventeen, she can barely admit her deepest longing: to know who she really is and where she belongs.

Then Pono, a young journeyman, arrives from the other side of the island. He’s come to fulfill a pact between their villages: to escort a storyteller back to his village—a storyteller who’ll be chosen at the great assembly. Finally, in Pono, Kita sees her one slim chance at freedom and she’ll risk her life to take it.
